I was really trying to avoid this, it was only a matter of time.
I’m a manga freak. “What is manga?” you ask? Japanese comic books. Yeah, I went there. I love many different series but this was the first I read, so I thought I should post about it first.
FRUITS BASKET!!
Fruits basket is about a family called the Sohmas. However, they hold a dark secret. They are cursed. Whenever they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, they turn into an animal from the chinese zodiac. Each character is a different animal, for example, Kyo (orange hair) is the cat, Yuki (grey hair) is the rat, and Shigure (black hair) is the dog. Things get complicated when they take in the recently orphaned Torhu (the girl in the middle).
Okay, it kinda sounds cheesy, but for some reason I can’t put it down. There’s a lot of twists and it even get kinda dark towards the end. Ah yes, the end.
Just to warn people new to manga, yes, most good series are long. Fruits Basket, for instance, is 23 books (which sadly is kinda short). There are many that go up into the 50’s. (and to think each one is $10. Thank heavens for a library!)
Most mangas also have an anime series to go with them. I absolutely love the anime, too! Usually, my biggest problem is I get hooked on a manga and then I go to watch the anime and its horrible. Either they change the characters all around or the english dubbed versions have awkwardly deep voices that distract me. But the worst, by far, is they cut the story down, which fruits basket’s anime does. The anime ends around book 6.
